It’s strange but true: I spent Labor Day 2015 actually in labor! All day on Monday I had intense contractions, and then at night they got even closer together. We checked into the triage area at Iowa Methodist in downtown Des Moines around midnight, and for a moment we thought we’d get turned away because I wasn’t far enough along and the contractions stalled. But then after an hour of walking around the hospital (while Levi slept in the car) I was dilated enough to be admitted with painful contractions spaced a few minutes apart. Go time!
In the actual delivery room, I labored for about six hours and then we finally met Finley. Our newest treasure, Finley Charles Byers, was born at 8:40 a.m., weighing 6 lbs., 15 oz. and measuring 19.5 inches long. We were also incredibly lucky to have one of our team of midwives at the ready, and Sea did a fantastic job coaching and delivering our new bundle of joy.
The only thing we’re waiting on now is for Finley to catch up on his breathing and eating habits. We got some quality time with him after the birth, but just when we thought we’d get away scot-free with a standard labor story, he mixed things up. It seems he inhaled some amniotic fluid on his way into the world, so he got a new room in the NICU where he is currently being monitored. He looks fantastic (like a second Isaac!) and we’re hopeful that we’ll all be home by this weekend.
We’ll let you know what Isaac thinks when he finally meets his little brother. Prepare for cute pic overload!
